Dr. Harsh Vardhan unanimously appointed Executive Board President of the WHO

New Delhi: India’s Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan has been unanimously elected the Chairman of the WHO Executive Board. India has taken over the command of the Executive Board, which runs the largest health institution of the United Nations, at a time when the world is facing the coronavirus crisis.


Addressing the 147th meeting of the board, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that the World Health Organization could work more effectively to reduce the number of deaths due to better coordination of global resources in their current COVID 19 crisis. Would like to do it.

At the same time, leaders and technical experts from other countries, including Dr. Harsh Vardhan, from their respective countries. India will be a member of the Executive Board for three years. At the same time, due to the turn of South and Southeast Asia for the presidency, India has been assigned its leadership.


Addressing the Executive Board after the election, the Indian Health Minister emphasized global efforts and cooperation for effective measures during the Corona pandemic.

He said that health reforms will be strengthened only by constant coordination between all member states and parties having common interests. At the same time, to achieve the goals of universal health coverage, it is necessary that more productive, efficient, and targeted use of resources is made.


Dr. Harshvardhan said that the corona pandemic has exposed the vulnerabilities of the existing health systems in the world. They have also shown how serious the consequences of ignoring health preparedness can be. Hence, in such times of global crisis, both risk management and mitigation needs to be given attention. The partnership will have to be strengthened to focus on public health at the global level and for more investment.


At the same time, before finishing his first presidential speech at the meeting, Dr. Harsh Vardhan gave a standing ovation for all the warriors and their families fighting from Corona all over the world. During this, Dr. Harsh Vardhan also stood up giving a speech.


In Geneva, World Health Organization Director Dr. Tedross and his team also stood and played applause. The WHO Executive Board is made up of 34 technically qualified members. The main job of the board is to implement the decisions and policies of the World Health Assembly. In addition, the board also guides the World Health Organization.
Significantly, in the meeting of the World Health Assembly held on May 18-19, a unanimous resolution was passed to investigate the reasons for the coronavirus reaching the human body. Also, since the start of the coronavirus crisis, the steps taken by the World Health Organization so far will also be independent, fair, and systematic assessment. This proposal was supported by more than 100 countries including India. Later, it came to the point that even China, trying to avoid these issues, became its co-mover.


Therefore, the responsibility of implementing this important decision of the World Health Assembly also rests with the Executive Board headed by Dr. Harsh Vardhan. It was also decided in the board meeting that the next meeting of the governing board of the World Health Organization will be held on 18 January 2021.
